EFT couples counseling effectively treats the root cause!
Crossroads Family Counseling Center is committed to strengthening marriages, couples, and families by offering a variety of research based services including Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, EFT. EFT couples counseling is a proven, tested, and empirically validated model that helps you express needs and concerns in a way that stops fighting, improves connection, and heals broken relationships. You will be able to find new solutions to those lingering problems, feel closer to your partner, and improve emotional, physical, and sexual intimacy.Unlike other relationship models, EFT goes to the root of the destructive patterns, harsh words, and defensive reactions that overwhelms a relationships or marriage. When couples argue, fight, and do not get along it is usually because they do not feel safely connected, close, heard, valued and loved. EFT helps you and your partner to improve communication, build trust, strengthen your emotional bond, and to increase connection which is the secret to a happy and fulfilling relationship.
EFT has better outcomes than cognitive, behavioral, communication skill building, and other approaches to marital therapy. Research on the success of EFT indicates that couples tend to move from distress to recovery in 15-20 sessions for 70-75% of the cases, and creates improvements in 90% of couples who complete EFT. Compare this to the next highest leading model's couple therapy rate which is only 35%.
EFT can help no matter how big or small the relationship or marriage problem.
Have you tried other approaches to couples counseling with limited or no success? We offer intensive marriage and couples counseling that can often help a couple who have tried other counseling approaches without success, who are in crisis, for those where meeting once a week for 50 minutes is insufficient, and for couples who need and desire a comprehensive approach.

The theory and practice of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy has also been successfully used with families. Family counseling utilizing Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, or EFFT, helps family members to resolve conflict, improve communication and understanding, and to heal family relationships. Crossroads Family Counseling Center offers family counseling using EFFT and counseling for both children ages 6-12 and adolescents ages 7-18 based on the theory of practice of EFFT.
How can EFT help you?
EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. Les Greenberg and draws heavily from John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory. Whereas most other marital approaches focus on improving communication skills, problem solving, conflict resolution, negative thoughts, and setting firmer boundaries EFT focuses on the root causes that lie behind conflict and distress in relationships. When couples or family members fight and argue it is usually due to not feeling emotionally connected, safe, secure, and being able to reach for comfort and reassurance.
When we can’t reach for comfort and closeness with our loved one we either pull away, shut down, and become distant or we react by becoming anxious, demanding, and clingy. These ways of dealing with disconnection develop into a negative cycle of interaction where you have one person who often will criticize, blame, and attack while the other defends, stonewalls, and closes off.
In a relatively short period of time, EFT helps couples and families to overcome the negative patterns and cycles and move into deeper, more fulfilling connection. It is when we are able to reach for comfort, reassurance, and share our deepest emotions and needs to feel safe and secure that real change occurs.
EFT has three stages:
- Identify the negative cycle of interaction and the deeper emotions and unmet attachment needs that often lie hidden under the harsh words and angry reactions.
- Create safety in the relationships so that each person can share their fears, hurts, and needs to feel loved in a way that strengthens the emotional bond and diffuses the rigid cycle.
- Consolidate the growth and changes that have been made so that no matter what future obstacles lie ahead you and your loved one will always be able to find your way back to one another.
